Being there for your baby
Comforting is one of the most natural things you do as a parent. When your baby cries, is restless, or doesn't feel well, you are the one who offers closeness and safety. By comforting, you let your baby know: I am here for you.
Comforting doesn't always have to stop the crying. Sometimes the most important thing is that your baby feels they are not alone.
Why comforting matters
Every time you comfort your baby, you strengthen your bond. Your baby learns that their feelings are allowed and that there is someone who helps them calm down again. This is the foundation for secure bonding and emotional development.
Ways to comfort
- holding your baby and keeping them close
- gentle rocking or movement
- talking softly or singing
- offering skin-to-skin contact
- creating a calm environment
- breathing calmly so your baby feels your calm
What works differs per baby and per moment. By trying and observing, you learn what helps your little one most.
When comforting doesn't work right away
Sometimes nothing seems to work. That can be frustrating and exhausting. It doesn't mean you are failing. Some babies need more time to calm down. Stay close, stay calm, and know that your presence alone is already comforting.
If it becomes too much, it's okay to take a step back. Place your baby safely down and take a breath. Ask for help when you need it.
Comforting is connecting
At We Care Academy, we see comforting as a form of love and connection. You don't have to do it perfectly. It's about being there, with gentleness and patience. That is enough.
