Every child is unique from the start

From birth, your baby already has their own character. Some babies are calm and content, others are more active and sensitive. This is called temperament: the innate way your child experiences and responds to the world.

Temperament is not something you cause as a parent. It is who your child is. By understanding your baby's temperament, you can better respond to what they need.

What is temperament?

Temperament describes how your baby reacts to stimuli, changes, and new situations. It involves things like:

  • how active your baby is
  • how quickly your baby responds to stimuli
  • how intensely emotions are expressed
  • how easily your baby adapts to changes
  • how sensitive your baby is to sounds, light, or touch
  • how regular the sleep and eating pattern is

Different temperaments

There is no right or wrong temperament. Some children are naturally calm and predictable, others are more intense and need more guidance. Both are normal.

A baby with an easy temperament adapts quickly and is usually content. A baby with a more intense temperament reacts more strongly to changes and needs more calm and predictability. And many babies are somewhere in between.

Connecting with your baby

As a parent, you don't need to change your baby's temperament. What you can do is adapt to it. By observing how your baby reacts, you learn what works and what doesn't. This way, you can create an environment that suits your child.

At We Care Academy, we help you get to know your baby better and connect with more confidence to who your child is.
