Growing at their own pace

Your baby's development is a wonderful process. In the first years of life, your child learns an incredible amount: from the first smile to the first steps, from babbling to the first words. Every child does this in their own way and at their own pace.

At We Care Academy, we want to help you follow your baby's development with wonder and confidence. Not by comparing, but by understanding what is happening.

Areas of development

Your baby's development encompasses several interconnected areas:

• Motor development: from lifting their head to crawling, standing, and walking
• Sensory development: seeing, hearing, feeling, tasting, and smelling
• Social and emotional development: smiling, making contact, expressing emotions
• Language development: from crying to babbling, from first words to sentences
• Cognitive development: discovering, understanding, remembering, and problem-solving

Milestones are guidelines

Developmental milestones give an indication of what most children can do at a certain age. But they are guidelines, not strict rules. Some children walk early, others talk early. That says nothing about how smart or healthy your child is.

If you are worried about your baby's development, discuss it with your GP or child health clinic. Early identification can be helpful, but try not to compare too much.

What you can do

You don't need to be a specialist to help your baby develop. The most important things you can offer are:

• attention and closeness
• talking and singing to your baby
• playing and discovering together
• giving space to practise
• a safe and stimulating environment
