Sleep in the early years
Sleep is one of the topics parents have the most questions about. How much sleep does my baby need? Why does my little one wake up so often? Is it normal that my baby doesn't sleep through the night? At We Care Academy, we want to help you better understand your baby's sleep behaviour.
What is normal
Babies sleep differently from adults. They have shorter sleep cycles, wake up more often, and need time to develop a day-night rhythm. That is not a problem, but a normal part of their development.
In the first months, your baby sleeps a lot, but in short periods. Gradually, sleep periods become longer and more regularity emerges. Every child does this at their own pace.
Common sleep challenges
- difficulty falling asleep
- frequent night waking
- short daytime naps
- restlessness around bedtime
- changes in sleep patterns during growth spurts or teething
These challenges are normal and part of your baby's development. They often resolve on their own, although it can sometimes take longer than you hope.
Tips for better sleep
While you cannot force sleep, you can create conditions that promote it:
- ensure a calm, dark sleeping environment
- maintain a consistent bedtime routine
- watch for your baby's sleep signals
- try to avoid overstimulation before bedtime
- offer closeness and reassurance
Safe sleeping
Safe sleeping is important. Place your baby on their back to sleep, in their own cot in your room, without loose blankets or stuffed animals. Ensure a good room temperature and avoid overheating.
When sleep deprivation affects you
Sleep deprivation can have a big impact on your wellbeing as a parent. It is important to take care of yourself too. Ask for help when you need it and be kind to yourself. At We Care Academy, you will find information and support to deal with sleep with more confidence.
